Social Media Strategy 101: Building A Foundation For Success

As a business, much of your online presence hinges on social media. You’ve got a great website, sure, but no one is going to see it if you don’t disseminate it, right? That’s right. And there’s no better way to do this quickly than by establishing your business on popular social media channels, right where your target audience can see you.

You may be wondering, “Hey, but what about all of those other digital marketing things I do?” Of course search engine optimization, email marketing, and online advertising also play a huge role in disseminating your website and brand, but they do so on an individual basis and typically yield slower, more intimate exchanges with potential customers. Your social media strategy is what drives public engagement with your business, engagement that attracts eyeballs and puts you at the center of conversations your customers and potential customers are having.

Put that way, we’re sure you’ll agree that refining your social media strategy is a worthy investment that will help build a foundation for your success. Let’s take a look at some of the ways you can get the most out of your social media marketing initiatives and ensure you see a happy social and financial return on that investment.

#1: Understand Your Audience

Understanding your target audience is key to creating content that resonates with them and entices them to purchase your product or service. Before pulling the trigger on your social media strategy, you and/or your marketing team should be conducting market research and identifying who your core customer is and what type(s) of content they engage with. Use this information to create buyer personas that represent the demographics, interests, and pain points shared by your target market.

When you take the time to get to know your target market firsthand, you can connect with them on a personal level. Instead of simply selling to them, you create the opportunity to engage in deeper discussions around who they are, what they like, and what they need from you.

#2: Choose The Right Platforms

You can’t, or shouldn’t, be present on every social media platform. It’s not sustainable and it’s not an optimal use of your marketing resources. Instead, spend some time uncovering where your core customer likes to hang out most online and firmly establish a presence there.

Some popular channels for you to look into are Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter), Pinterest, Reddit, and LinkedIn. You might also look into more niche social media platforms like Behance, Discord, and Goodreads that are less popular but may be popular with your target audience.

Explore the various social media platforms available and discuss with your marketing team how to determine which ones are best suited for your business and brand. Remember to consider factors such as audience demographics, platform features, and your objectives and capabilities when making decisions around which platforms to utilize in your marketing endeavors.

#3: Monitor And Analyze

Most social media platforms offer analytics tools that provide insights into metrics such as reach, engagement, clicks, and conversions. You can use these metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of your strategy, identify areas for improvement, and make data-driven decisions moving forward.

Remember, companies driven by metrics are more than twice as likely to hit targets than their instinctually driven counterparts. According to McKinsey Global Institute, data-driven businesses are 23 times more likely to acquire customers, six times as likely to retain customers, and 19 times more likely to be profitable. Yes, some companies still choose to base marketing decisions off opinions and gut feeling. However, monitoring and analyzing hard numbers on performance indicators is key if you want to meet ambitious marketing objectives.

#4: Stay Up-To-Date And Informed

As your social media channels gain popularity, recognize that you have a reputation to uphold there. This means you should be staying on top of the latest social media trends, updates, and best practices that apply to the platforms you use. It also means consistently having something to bring to the table. We highly recommend following industry experts, attending webinars or conferences, and regularly reviewing insights and case studies to stay ahead of the curve and fuel new content.
